Hotel bars are normally so Business-Trip-With-Nothing-Better-To-Do or A-Convenient-Meeting-Place-For-An-Affair... but that was before the Ace.

The Ace Hotel on West 29th Street has redefined the hotel bar (and the hotel lobby, and the midtown hangout...) all in one fell swoop. With a look that's prep-school library meets hunting-enthusiast den, bellhops who resemble Dave Grohl, a whole menu of gin and tonics, plus food from the Breslin Bar next door, this is not your dad's hotel.

The lobby is always full, with a refreshingly adult (read: not Lower East Side) crowd. There's a photo booth so you can remember the night you had the best burger in Manhattan (it's lamb and it's spectacular). The downstairs space, called Liberty Hall, hosts events and concerts; but if there's nothing on, you can hang out there like we did, with a DJ, a food menu, and lots of comfy couches.

If you're there during daylight hours, visit the Portland coffee roaster Stumptown in their lobby nook for a divine jolt of joe and then browse the second NY location of Opening Ceremony, located just off the lobby. It's being billed as an anti-souvenir shop, with designers like Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang rethinking souvenirs and travel essentials just for this location.

This is your new go-to spot. You just might forget it IS a hotel.

Just Another Bad Knockoff

This week Harper Collins revealed the cover image of Candace Bushnell's much-anticipated Sex and the City prequel series, The Carrie Diaries. And we're not gonna lie...it's kinda disappointing.

The character of Carrie Bradshaw is a pop culture phenomenon--an icon the likes of which we haven't seen since Audrey Hepburn. Flower pins, sequined hotpants and ankle booties have her to thank for its rise to infamy, and the understatement of the century would be to call her a "trendsetter." The woman is force of nature. Hell, she even put Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik on the map.

So to see sweet adolescent Miss Bradshaw marketed as a (very bad) Stephen Sprouse for Louis Vuitton knockoff is...well, cheap. Luckily, we know that SATC's real success is not based on the original novel. I mean, have you read it?! Exactly. If you have, you know it's god-awful. If you haven't, you don't care enough to pick it up anyway.

Carrie Bradshaw is a cult sensation thanks to three people: Sarah Jessica Parker (duh), Michael Patrick King (who wrote and directed most of the HBO episodes, as well as both movies) and Patricia Field (the world's now most famous costume designer). Bushnell seems to only be riding the success wave by re-packaging Bradshaw at a very opportune time.

Will it sell? Of course. Will it be worth reading? Probably not. We'll save our breath (and our money) for SATC 2, which is sure to be far more visually stimulating.

Top of the Line

We all know the Brits have some serious individual style, and TopShop is becoming a style trendsetter stateside with their Soho store. Sequins, silhouettes, and shoulders were the order of the night at TopShop's winter preview party last night.

Jackets, from bolero to dinner, dresses and tops were festooned in sequins of all colors, perfect for the upcoming party season. We spotted silhouettes on bags and dresses, including this adorable sheer pink dress with boy and girl silhouettes.

Kate Moss' collection was also a standout, with sexy secretary silk pencil skirts.

Shoulders were a focus with ruched tops in soft knits.

Now that's what we call power dressing.

Forcing the Fashion Envelope

Love it or hate it, absolutely no one can deny the sheer power-grip pop music clenches over the fashion world. The symbiotic relationship of catchy beats and all things sparkly has been the driving force of trends throughout the decades -- Britney's crop tops, Madonna's fingerless gloves, Donna Summer's 'do. So who's next on the scene? Unless you've been hiding under an L.L.Bean rock, you're all over the divine miss Lady Gaga.

Her latest video, released just yesterday is complete with style nods to Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream," Where the Wild Things Are, Alexander McQueen's lobster claws and Fifth Element-inspired body tape. Judge for yourself, but all we know is there is no stopping her fashion-fluence.

How to Break Away from Black

It's a tough world, baby. And just how do we New Yorkers deal with it? By embracing black. The color of our coffee -- and some of our hearts.

No seriously, black is without a doubt the color of defense. Slips, spills and certain subway drips are no match when we're clad in our armor of ebony. But are these monochromatic outfits a method of physical defense? Or emotional? Are we really just trying to blend in with our fellow smug Manhattanites?

Not to get too philosophical on this subject, but it has us thinking. Recently a good friend told me the thing she was best at was not wearing black. Could this be a new life project I adopt? As a designer, I'm obsessed with magentas and marigolds, but I'm not so sure that I could personally pull that off.

Now the question is: How do you brighten up your wardrobe without looking like Jessica Simpson at a barbeque? We've come to the conclusion that this 3.1 Phillip Lim sequined tuxedo cardigan is damn near perfect. It's dull shine and effortless movement allow us to break away from our drones of dark and emerge a somewhat brighter -- and much more interesting -- New Yorker.

Wine, cheese and shopping... Does it get much better than that? Oh yeah, when you're at one of the nation's top fashion magazines it does!

We recently had the opportunity to spend the day at InStyle, mixing and mingling with the fabulous staff. Laid atop our signature purple table cloth, the Spring 2010 collection immediately inspired a host of "oohs" from our guests. Not only was the day a huge success in sales, but it also allowed us to show the bags and watch honest reactions. The ladies loved all the colorful interiors and were amazed by how much our eco-chic vegan line feels like real leather. Some editors even noticed we were ahead of the fencing trend -- just like Zac Posen!

This is our newest evening bag. The Pleated Evening Morgan. Following the trends for Spring 2010 sparkle and exotics are in. The printed leather snake as seen here is one example. The bag will also come in a burlap/gold and gold lamb trim and some pearlized lamb.

What I love about this bag is that its edgy to wear with the punk rocker looks that are coming out but can also be worn to a black tie event.
